Vacation Bible School - is it time for a change?

Those of us raised in (or near) a church are familiar with Vacation Bible School.  A week-long, camp-like experience filled with music and crafts and Bible stories.  Somehow it seems to always be the hottest week of the summer (ask any of the volunteers!).

But has it served it's usefulness?  Are today's techno-savvy kids 'beyond' VBS?

The next installment of the film version of the Chronicles of Narnia will be out in December 2010 - Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  We had such a good response to the church movie outing to see Prince Caspian that I am looking forward to planning another event!  We also had a screening of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to refresh the story in everyone's mind.  If there is interest, I will plan this again.  Stay tuned!  (and let me know if you'd be interested in helping to plan this event)

The church website has a whole new look and feel.  Information is easier to find and better organized - hopefully helping visitors and members alike.  Please send any comments to kristi@windhamchurch.org.

Thanks!  Kristi

Leaders needed

We are in need of leaders for two vital Children's programs.

1)  The 2nd Service Sunday school needs a leader starting mid-January.  This class usually has 7-12 kids, centered around 2nd - 4th grade (but the class technically includes K-5th Grade).

2)  WATCH Kids (Wednesdays At The CHurch) - Leaders needed for one or more Wednesdays to address one topic, or on a rotating basis with the current leaders.  The class is usually 7 -10 kids, typically between 2nd - 4th grade.  WATCH Kids is a little longer than Sunday School (runs 7:00 - 8:30pm) and therefore a little MORE of everything.  There is still a Bible-based lesson but the time together includes games and movement and sometimes even toilet paper!!  Grab an extra cup of joe and sign on to hang with WATCH Kids on Wednesday nights.  The kids won't be the only ones learning, I guarantee!!  WATCH starts again on January 13th.

Contact Kristi at kristi@windhamchurch.org to sign up, or to get more information.

Faithgirlz - Anyone interested?

Do you have a daughter, granddaughter or niece who is a 'tween?  That would be ages 9-12, give or take a year.   If so, check out the Faithgirlz website at http://www.faithgirlz.com/.  There are lots of things to read and discover there with your 'tween or for them alone.  Faithgirlz is a branch of Zondervan Publishing, and includes a whole product line including Bibles, books, series of books (you know how kids like series!) and other Christian-related items.  They also have an event that can be hosted by local churches for moms and their daughters.  I would love to see this event come to the area.  Are you interested?  The event is run from 9am - noon and includes music, a presentation by Nancy Rue (the main author of Faithgirlz series) and a snack and craft time with mom.

Let me know if you are interested in seeing this event come to Southern New Hampshire.  I would be glad to jump on board to help make it happen.  Where two or more are gathered...

And of course, the classic, Linus reciting the Christmas Story from Scripture:

Christmas Shopping - Gift Suggestions

47 Days Til Christmas!  Are you looking for presents to keep Christ in Christmas?  Do you have suggestions for others as they make their lists?

If you are planning to do an Advent wreath at home this year - get it quick!  Thanksgiving weekend is the first weekend of Advent.  You can get Avent wreaths at www.christianbook.com to fit all budgets.  I've heard Hallmark stores carry them - very nice but pricey.  You can get tips for using the Advent wreath at home here http://www.pcusa.org/ideas/advent/adventwreath.htm.  and here http://www.pcusa.org/advent/pdf/lightingadventcandles-children.pdf

Bibles are good gifts any time of the year.  There are several new ones that you can consider for kids.  They can all be purchased from www.christianbook.com or www.amazon.com.  For younger kids check out My First Message: A Devotional Bible for Kids by Eugene Peterson.  Girls might like the God's Little Princess Devotional Bible: Bible Storybook by Sheila Walsh.  Another new one for children is the Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones.  There is a new deluxe edition that includes a book-on-cd version.  Tweens might like the manga Bible series by Young Shin Lee and published by Zondervan/ Z Graphic Novels.  I have copies of all of these if you'd like to see them.

What are your children's favorite Christian books or series?
